Firefox & IE7
Sunday, October 22nd, 2006 | Tech News | No Comments
With the impending releases of Internet Explorer 7, I would like to remind my readers that there is another option. In fact there are two other options that would be a good choice as a primary browser, Firefox and Opera . Personally I prefer Firefox to Opera, the bias is purely subjective. I just like how Firefox does things and I like the the user interface. There is nothing wrong with Opera, its just not for me. With that being said, Firefox is set to release its latest version late this month. You don't have to wait for 2.0 to come out, the latest stable release 1.5.07 is available and I urge you to at least give it a spin. Check out TweakGuides.com to learn how to optimize you new copy of Firefox.
In related IE7 news, Microsoft will be pushing IE7 via Windows Update as a high priority update, but will be an optional update. There have already been a few concerns over possible exploits, but one thing is for sure, this update will be worth the time to download it. Until website developers stop designing sites to use activeX there will always be a need to keep a IE around. It may as well be a more secure version than the porous IE6.
Viewpoints on Vista

Paul Thurrott has written an interesting article looking back to the early days of Vista's (longhorn) development. You can read about the 1st two articles here. It is worth a read to see how much optimistic Gates and the Windows folk were back in 2001. Vista today looks nothing like the idealistic view of Longhorn they had dreamed up. I can't wait for the rest of Paul's history comes out.
John Dvorak's latest PCMag article brings up some serious concerns for the possible inclusion of Windows Genuine Advantage in the retail release of Vista. John has been writing on technology for a very long time and I enjoy his articles immensly and his blog is on my daily list of reading.
Windows Live Writer

Today I am writing to you from my test install of Microsoft Windows Vista RC1 Build 5600 and Windows Live Writer Beta. I have been using Vista for about a week and so far so good. The Aero Glass interface is quite beautiful and I do like some of the security enhancements that have been made, but others have written about Vista so I will leave the critique to them.
How to explain DRM to non-technical PC users
Thursday, September 7th, 2006 | Tech News | No Comments
There is a good discussion over at slashdot.org about how to explain DRM to someone who isn't familiar to it, i.e. a non-techie. There are a number of good solutions and I suggest that if you don't know what it is, or know someone who wants to have it explained, to read the discussion going on there.
SLI/Crossfire Explained
Tuesday, September 5th, 2006 | Tech News | No Comments
I just came across a good overview of the similarities and differences between Nvidia's SLI and ATI's Crossfire multi-GPU systems. Read about it here. Its worth a read of you are a bleeding edge gamer and want the eye candy, but then again, who doesn't want the eye candy.
A recent revue of ATI vs Nvidia Quad GPU systems was published by the fine people over at Firing Squad.com , and the winner of the battle is…drumroll please…well it seems that it depends. Nvidia has support for more games at this time and is a more mature product, but the performance of the ATI setup is quite good. It will all boil down to whether you are a ATI or Nvidia person, and of course, cost.
DRM & Fair Use
Monday, September 4th, 2006 | Music, Tech News | No Comments
Digital Rights Management has long been a thorn in my side. Although the laws here in the frozen north are different than in the sunny south , we Canadians feel the effects of the RIAA and DRM. I have never liked DRM and looked for ways around it, after all, I purchased the music I want to be able to play it where I want. Currently the one sure fire way to un-DRM your purchased music was to burn it to a CD/DVD and re-rip it, which is a time consuming process. Then some interesting news came out… › Continue reading
