Windows Live Writer

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006 | Tech News | Comments Off

Today I am writing to you from my test install of Microsoft Windows Vista RC1 Build 5600 and Windows Live Writer Beta.  I have been using Vista for about a week and so far so good.  The Aero Glass interface is quite beautiful and I do like some of the security enhancements that have been made, but others have written about Vista so I will leave the critique to them.

Windows Defender & WSUS

Thursday, September 14th, 2006 | Tech Help | Comments Off

I have installed Windows Defender on a few of the corporate laptops and noticed that they were not getting definition updates.  I tried reinstalling the product but was unable to get it to update.  Google turned up some leads but none of them worked for me.  On a whim I went to check out WSUS server to see if the updates were available there.  In the Sync Options area, under Products I saw what I wanted to see.  Windows Defender updates are pushed through MS Update and since we use WSUS instead of MS Update the laptops were not getting updated.   I few clicks and a sync later our Windows Defender installs are now getting up to date definitions.

If you run a MS Exchange server it is a good idea to implement SPF to help protect yourself against spammers spoofing your domain.

You can use this tool to create your SPF code and then this tutorial to add the entry into your DNS server.  Consider this another tool in the fight against spam.

How to explain DRM to non-technical PC users

Thursday, September 7th, 2006 | Tech News | Comments Off

There is a good discussion over at slashdot.org about how to explain DRM to someone who isn't familiar to it, i.e. a non-techie.  There are a number of good solutions and I suggest that if you don't know what it is, or know someone who wants to have it explained, to read the discussion going on there.

SLI/Crossfire Explained

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006 | Tech News | Comments Off

I just came across a good overview of the similarities and differences between Nvidia's SLI and ATI's Crossfire multi-GPU systems.  Read about it here.  Its worth a read of you are a bleeding edge gamer and want the eye candy, but then again, who doesn't want the eye candy.

A recent revue of ATI vs Nvidia Quad GPU systems was published by the fine people over at Firing Squad.com , and the winner of the battle is…drumroll please…well it seems that it depends.  Nvidia has support for more games at this time and is a more mature product, but the performance of the ATI setup is quite good.  It will all boil down to whether you are a ATI or Nvidia person, and of course, cost.

Wordpress Plugin: Ad-Rotator

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006 | Tech Help | 8 Comments

Ad-Rotator is simple, yet effective ad rotation plugin for Wordpress written by Angsuman Chakraborty .  As is often the case with community written plugins, the technical docs on how to get the plugin to work are limited and somewhat confusing, specifically in regards to Google's Ad-sense program.  I was able to reach Angsuman via email and after a quick flurry of messages he was able to show me how to get Ad-Rotator working with a number of different affiliate programs, including Ad-sense. › Continue reading

DRM & Fair Use

Monday, September 4th, 2006 | Music, Tech News | Comments Off

Digital Rights Management has long been a thorn in my side.  Although the laws here in the frozen north are different than in the sunny south , we Canadians feel the effects of the RIAA and DRM.  I have never liked DRM and looked for ways around it, after all, I purchased the music I want to be able to play it where I want.  Currently the one sure fire way to un-DRM your purchased music was to burn it to a CD/DVD and re-rip it, which is a time consuming process.  Then some interesting news came out… › Continue reading
